About ESPN Baseball Tonight

ESPN Baseball Tonight is a baseball game with both exhibition and playoff modes. Other modes included are both practice (both pitching and batting) and Home Run Derby modes. The game contains 28 real MLB teams but no actual players. Gameplay options include being able to turn errors on or off and to have assisted fielding on or off. Gameplay has the behind the batter viewpoint, whether pitching or batting. One thing to note when fielding, the player must manually throw the ball back to the pitcher for the game to continue. The Sega CD version is an update which includes the option for an 162 game season and has over 10 minutes of video highlights.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($4).

Also released on: Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · DOS · Super Nintendo Entertainment System. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A broadcast-flavored baseball game on the Genesis that GamePro found short on fun, and nearly free to buy.

ESPN Baseball Tonight came out in North America in June 1994. Park Place Productions developed the Genesis version and Sony Imagesoft published it. An early GameFan preview described it as hosted by Chris Berman, with 30-frames-per-second player animation and a first-person presentation.

GamePro said the Genesis version offers great graphics and sound but falls well short on fun.

A May 1994 Sony Imagesoft ad announced it as available for Genesis, with Super NES and Sega CD versions to follow.

Among US carts it is at the very bottom for loose price, and the risk of a fake is low. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega CD version

A Sony Imagesoft baseball game built around TV-style presentation, with little on this disc to separate it from the cartridge versions.

This is the Sega CD version, which Sony Imagesoft's own development team handled. It came out in North America and in Europe in 1994, in the same year as the cartridge versions.

A British preview in Sega Magazine promised live commentary, footage from real baseball games, digitized player animation and a choice of 28 stadiums on the CD version. Chris Berman, ESPN's anchorman, was announced as the commentator when Sony signed on with ESPN for Mega-CD, Mega Drive and Super NES versions.

Before you buy

Among North American Sega CD games this sits below the middle on price. The European disc usually costs a lot more than the US one, loose and complete, and needs a European Mega-CD to play. Complete means the tall plastic case with its manual, so check the case matches the game; a quick look at the printed label and the inner ring of the disc is enough at this price.
