About ESPN Sunday Night NFL

ESPN Sunday Night NFL was one of the many football games released back in the day. It features all 28 official NFL teams and their respective logos, but doesn't feature a license from the NFLPA, so there are no actual players names in the game. There are four different game modes to choose from: Playoffs, Single Game, Season and another season mode that lets the player act out the 1994 NFL season schedule. It also had variable weather conditions that the players on the field would react to and a battery back-up to save games. It also featured Chris Berman, who not only graced the front cover but also gives commentary as well.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($3).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

What it needs to play

  • Some modesSave battery (inside the cartridge) — saves to memory kept alive by a battery inside the cartridge; if that battery has died, saves are lost (MAME cartridge records).

How often it sells

  • Loose: about 6 times a year
  • Complete: about once a month
  • Sealed: about once a year

Prices marked “few sales” rest on about one recorded sale a year, so treat them as a rough guide: the next copy could sell well above or below. Expect to wait for one to come up.

The Sega Genesis version

An early-90s football game with TV branding and a battery save, but it trails the sports giants of its day.

ESPN Sunday Night NFL came to the Genesis in 1994 from Ringler Studios and Absolute Entertainment, published by Sony Imagesoft. Super NES and Sega CD versions exist as well; this page is about the Genesis cartridge.

Computer and Video Games reported in August 1993 that ESPN anchorman Chris Berman would provide the commentary. GamePro, reviewing the Genesis version, said it lacks the polish of Madden 95, criticizing the missing real players, identical player performance, poor graphics and limited sound effects.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

GamePro said the Genesis version lacked the execution of Madden and criticized its lack of real players, poor graphics and limited sound effects.

GamePro judged the Super NES version an improvement over the Genesis one, with better graphics, sounds and playability, though both flicker.

Before you buy

It is one of the cheaper US carts. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake.

The Sega CD version

The Sega CD edition of Sony Imagesoft's football game adds Chris Berman's voice and video, which is the main reason to prefer it.

This is the Sega CD version of ESPN Sunday Night NFL, developed by Ringler Studios and published by Sony Imagesoft. It came out only in North America, in November 1994.

Electronic Gaming Monthly, in its Sega CD write-up, said the disc adds full-motion video and live audio from Chris Berman, who commentates on the game and also gives scouting reports and stats at pregame, halftime and postgame. You can play a single game, a season (based on the 1994 season), a random season or the playoffs.

Before you buy

It is one of the cheaper North American Sega CD releases, well below the middle of the pack. Nothing here calls for special checks beyond confirming that the disc and case are the same game and that the disc is in good condition.
