A Sega boxing game that critics split on and that costs little in North America.

Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing was developed by Acme Interactive and published by Sega. It reached North America in August 1992, Europe on 24 September 1992 and Japan on 30 October 1992. A sequel followed in 1993.

Opinion was divided. Mean Machines said it had some good ideas and impressive graphics, but felt the gameplay and in-game logic ruined them. Wizard magazine and Mega Play praised the Genesis version.

What the press said at the time

Mean Machines Sega Issue 3December 199252%
Sega Pro Issue 36September 199484%

“One-player mode is extremely challenging, but the two-player action is the most fun. It's the perfect way to take out your frustrations and settle old scores!”

— GamePro, July 1992

“"REAL DEAL" BOXING What looks like a decent enough boxing game is in actual fact a small, boring, jerky sports sim with rub bish animation. There are loads of options, but the game is just too dull to be worthwhile. The £49.99 price tag helps matters none either.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Good main sprites and extremely challenging gameplay makes it a better than usual simulation. Crunching sound effects are realistic. Awesome!”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Mean Machines awarded the Mega Drive version 52%, citing some good ideas and impressive graphics ruined by awful gameplay.
