A Coleco of Canada release of a computer hit, with little documented about the cartridge itself.

Evolution came to the ColecoVision in 1983 through Coleco of Canada, developed by Sydney. A 1989 profile of Distinctive Software's Don Mattrick in Video Games & Computer Entertainment called the computer original a cult hit that was eventually published in ColecoVision format.

Little else is documented about the ColecoVision cartridge's play, so there is no honest review to summarize. Computer Entertainer's mail-order list later offered it among rare ColecoVision titles.

How it was made

Sydney is listed as developer and Coleco of Canada as publisher.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 4 No. 9December 1985Graphics ★★ · Play-Action ★★½

“the game has rarely been seen … making it a natural for collectors … want it anyway.”

— Computer Entertainer, December 1985

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

How the ColecoVision version differs

Evolution was first distributed in Canada through Coleco of Canada and was rarely seen in the United States, which makes the ColecoVision cartridge a collector's item.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. Your creature evolves through stages from amoeba, tadpole, rodent, beaver and gorilla to human, each with its own goal and controls.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. As the tadpole you eat water flies while avoiding fish, which you can run from or jump over.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. The left side button triggers special effects that differ by stage, such as dropping dung as the rodent.

Before you buy

Region matters: this is a Coleco of Canada release, not a US one, so ask where the copy came from. The ColecoVisionADAM.com museum also files Evolution in its Telegames category, so a pressing from that company may turn up and should be tested, since Telegames carts have a reported high failure rate. No price is tracked for it, so compare actual sold listings rather than relying on a price guide.
