Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

Codemasters' Dizzy adventure on the Master System, and one of the pricier European carts.

Fantastic Dizzy is an adventure-platform game in the Dizzy series, developed and published by Codemasters. The Master System version reached Europe in October 1993, after the original appeared in 1991 on other systems.

The Master System version shares a mine-cart section with the other versions, where the dangers include falling rocks; on the Master System, Game Gear and NES versions those rocks are explosions.

Sega Master Force Issue 6December 199387%

“These are easíly the best graphícs I háve seen on the Master System. … Hundreds of stars to toilett and over 60 puzzles to soive - and thaťs just for starters!”

— Sega Pro, October 1993

“Packed with puzzles, this is an excellent adventure game, but can be frustrating at times. If Codemasters had included a password system there would’ve been a lot more playability, but as it is you’ll still want to stick with it and see what lies ahead.”

— Sega Master Force, December 1993

Before you buy

This is a European release, so shop European listings first. It sits well above the typical price for a European game, but the look-alike risk is low, so a normal seller photo is enough. A complete copy should have its manual.

The Sega Genesis version

A cute Dizzy adventure that Sega Pro thought sat better on the 8-bit systems than on the Mega Drive.

Codemasters developed and published the Genesis version of Fantastic Dizzy. The page covers the Dizzy adventure on several systems; the cartridge here is the Genesis one, which reached North America in 1993 and Europe in December 1993. You guide the egg-shaped hero around, collecting objects and solving puzzles.

Mark Hill of Sega Pro found the Mega Drive version somewhat disappointing after enjoying the Master System and Game Gear versions: the graphics were cute but not especially fantastic, and he felt the game suited the 8-bit formats better.

What the press said at the time

“Want a game as sweet and slow as molasses? Meet Dizzy, a hit in Europe but not all that fantastic on the Genesis.”

— GamePro, January 1994

Also on other platforms

Master System · NES · MS-DOS · Game Gear · Amiga · CD32

  • Game Gear. Sega Master Force found the Game Gear characters and objects too small but praised its varied soundtrack and controls, saying the music put the Mega Drive version to shame.
  • NES. The NES version was one of the seven games released for the Aladdin Deck Enhancer.
  • NES. The NES version was named NES Adventure Game of the Year 1991 by Game Players Magazine.

Before you buy

Among US carts this sits a little above the median. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs somewhat more. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
