About Fantastic Voyage

The game is based on the 1966 movie of the same name. The player controls a miniaturized submarine which is injected into the bloodstream of a gravely ill person. Your task is to destroy blood clots which are clogging the arteries in order to keep the patient alive. If you fail to do so or crash your submarine the game is over. While voyaging throughh the body you have to destroy other enemies such as bacteria. However, you should not destroy the blood cells lest the patient dies.

A film tie-in shooter through the bloodstream, more interesting as an idea than as a game.

Fantastic Voyage is based on the 1966 film. You pilot a miniature submarine through a patient's bloodstream to reach a life-threatening blood clot. David Lubar programmed it at Sirius Software, and Fox Video Games released it for the Atari 2600 in December 1982.

It was Lubar's second 2600 game after Worm War I. Sirius had a working relationship with Fox, which had its programmers adapt films from Fox's catalogue, and Lubar picked this one. Reviews were mixed: some found the gameplay and graphics mediocre, while others credited it with bringing unusual themes to the shooter.

How it was made

Programmed by David Lubar at Sirius Software for Fox Video Games, his second Atari 2600 game after Worm War I.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 9December 1982Graphics ★★ · Play-Action ★★
Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 6April 19832½ joysticks

“Fox is to be commended for an attempt to a game with something beyond the typical "shoot-em-up" scenario, but the game gets just plain boring once you've played it a few times. Even the graphics are ho-hum.”

— Computer Entertainer, December 1982

“It's not only that Raquel Welch isn't along for the ride or that you never really win (just earn the right to operate again), it's that the game doesn't ever realize its potential.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, April 1983

“The graphics are admittedly sparse, but there are all kinds of flavorful touches, such as the oscilloscopic Heart Monitor at the bottom of the screen”

— Videogaming Illustrated, April 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

How the Atari 2600 version differs

Taito's arcade adaptation, Bio-Attack, added more advanced graphics and a boss fight at the end of each level, neither of which the 2600 original has.

  • Arcade. Taito's arcade version, titled Bio-Attack, was released only in Japan in April 1983 under license from Fox Video Games, running on Taito SJ System hardware.
  • Atari 8-bit. Reviewing the Atari 8-bit computer version, Video Games found its graphics and sound similar to the original game's and said they could have been done with more flair.
