About FIFA Soccer 95

After the first game proved to be a worldwide success, EA developed this sequel exclusively for Sega's 16-bit console. The biggest change from FIFA International Soccer are obviously the dozens of club teams from England, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, United States, Spain and Brazil, taking the team number tally to over 200. This also increased the number of competitions, with each country having it's own League, Tournament and Playoff. Also new, a battery backup allowed to save up to four competitions in the cartridge, replacing passwords. For those who want to settle things the fast way, a Penalty Shootout training mode was added.

What it needs to play

  • Some modesSave battery (inside the cartridge) — saves to memory kept alive by a battery inside the cartridge; if that battery has died, saves are lost (MAME cartridge records).

How often it sells

  • Loose: about once a month
  • Complete: about once a week
  • Sealed: about once a year

Prices marked “few sales” rest on about one recorded sale a year, so treat them as a rough guide: the next copy could sell well above or below. Expect to wait for one to come up.

A well-regarded second FIFA on the Genesis that is cheap to buy and saves to a battery.

FIFA Soccer 95 is the second game in the FIFA series and a sequel to FIFA International Soccer. Extended Play Productions developed it and EA Sports published it, in North America in 1994 and in Europe on 11 November 1994.

The Italian magazine Console Mania called it the definitive football game for the Mega Drive, praising the improvements over its predecessor and its larger selection of teams.

What the press said at the time

“This little accomplishment was-a pleasant surprise, making a terrific game just a little bit, more entertaining.”

— Diehard GameFan, November 1994

“All these new features do add quite noticeably to the action, making FIFA '95 much more enjoyable than its predecessor. Although, not so much that it would warrant a purchase if you already own the first game.”

— Sega Magazine, December 1994

“FIFA ‘95 is clearly the best soccer cart. There’s no other game that comes close.”

— Game Informer, January 1995

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs about half as much as the US one, loose or complete. Some modes save to a battery inside the cartridge, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play and with XBAND. EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games, while Sega's later Team Player (MK-1647) runs both in its EXTRA mode.
