A sound two-player brawler with a strange alien cast, and a cheap US cart.

Fighting Masters is a one-on-one fighting game from Aicom and ALU, published by Treco. It came out in Japan on 6 December 1991 and in North America in February 1992. You fight a procession of aliens to reach Lord Valgasu. It was co-directed by Hajime Kusano and Ramo Kobayashi, with some of the team who later worked at Almanic on E.V.O.: Search for Eden.

Period reviews agreed it is better with a friend. Computer and Video Games called it the closest the Mega Drive had come to Street Fighter and great fun in two-player mode, with the one-player game less so. Mean Machines found it an enjoyable fighter with weak music, and Sega Force felt nothing made it stand out.

“Graphics are fine, sound'sa tad whiffy, but gameplay has been well designed for maximum laffs. In one player mode the game can become a tad samey. but find a chum to fight with end this cart really takes oft! Everyone will fine their”

— Computer + Video Games, February 1992

“But overall, there’s nothing that makes Fighting Masters stand out from others of this genre.”

— Sega Force, March 1992

“Fighting Masters’ game play earns it a technical KO over the competition.”

— Video Games & Computer Entertainment, July 1992

“As a one player game Fighting Masters falls flat on its face. The two-player mode is a different kettle of fish.”

— MegaTech, September 1992

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits a little below the middle. The Japanese cart usually costs noticeably more than the US one and has a different cartridge shape, so it needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
