  • Worldwide (reissue): A new official cartridge that plays on an original 7800. If a listing doesn't say which one it is, ask for the manual's copyright line: an original reads Atari Corporation with a 1980s or 1990 date.

A faithful launch-wave arcade port from the people who designed the 7800's chips, with a modern reissue to watch for.

Food Fight was in the 7800's first wave in 1986, and General Computer Corporation, the company that designed the console's custom chips, developed it. Computer Entertainer's 1984 preview said it keeps the arcade's instant replay and offers 50 skill levels. A distributor's first shipment of seven games in June 1986, according to Computer Entertainer, included it.

A quirk documented on Wikipedia: in rare cases in the 7800 port, Charley can be hit by food or a chef during the instant replay.

How it was made

General Computer Corporation developed the 7800 version and Atari Corporation published it, with the catalogue number CX 7804.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 5 No. 6September 1986Graphics ♦♦♦♦ · Play-Action ♦♦♦♦

“The gameplay is fast-paced and will kee arcade action fan busy for hours.”

— Computer Entertainer, September 1986

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

How the Atari 7800 version differs

Computer Entertainer called Food Fight the first truly new title Atari released for the 7800, since it had not been available for any other home system.

Worth knowing

  • From the 7800 manual. Pause button supported.

Before you buy

An official reissue exists, released in May 2024 and playable on an original 7800. The sourced check is the manual: an original carries an Atari Corporation, Sunnyvale copyright with a 1980s date, and a sealed copy is far more likely to be the reissue. The original is a gray-label cartridge that AtariAge rates Common+. It uses the Pro-Line two-button stick and supports two players. One community source, the Atari Compendium, reports that Food Fight can have trouble on later-revision 7800 consoles with the extra timing circuit, so test it on your own console if you can.
