SNK's only American football game on the system, a flashy, much-maligned cart that is cheap to own.

Football Frenzy was developed and published by SNK, a few weeks after its arcade release in January 1992 for the Japanese AES cart in February. It was SNK's second football game after Touchdown Fever and the only football game released for the Neo Geo. One or two players pick from about ten teams, and a zoom feature closes in on the crucial play.

Electronic Games described it in late 1992 as a 48-meg cartridge with larger, well-animated players and a zoom that brought the key moment into sharp focus. GameFan was less kind a couple of years later, calling it much-maligned, and later critics have split on whether the gameplay is hard to grasp.

A Neo Geo CD version was among that system's launch titles in 1994.

What the press said at the time

“The on-screen gridders are larger and well-animated, and the zoom feature brings the crucial moment of every play into sharp focus.”

— Electronic Games, November 1992

How the Neo Geo AES version differs

Electronic Games described the Neo Geo release as a 48-meg cartridge with 10 selectable teams and a zoom feature.

Before you buy

The US cart costs more than the Japanese one, and complete copies cost noticeably more than loose carts, but it sits among the cheaper early carts in the library. At this price a conversion is a low risk, so a normal check of the label, case and manual is enough. ACA NeoGeo makes the arcade version easy to play today; the cart is for completing a shelf.
