The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($8).

Also released on: Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Atari ST/STE · DOS · Amiga · Sega Master System/Mark III · IBM PC · Sega Game Gear. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A Formula One racer from Domark that also reached Brazil through Tec Toy, and a mid-priced European cart.

Sold as F1 on the Master System, this Formula One racing game was developed by Teque London and published by Domark in Europe in October 1993. Tec Toy released it in Brazil in 1993.

It is based on Vroom, a 1991 Atari ST game by the French company Lankhor. An early Mean Machines Sega news item said Domark was making a Formula One simulator for the Master System, Mega Drive and Game Gear, with car set-up options covering tyres, aerodynamics and telemetry.

How it was made

Developed by Teque London and published by Domark in Europe and Tec Toy in Brazil.

What the press said at the time

Sega Master Force Issue 4October 1993NICK 68%

“The graphics are nothing out of this world. Cars look rather pathetic but the scrolling’s good and tunnels and bridges are quite a novelty. … Don’t bother with Ft, it’s nothing special at all.”

— Sega Master Force, October 1993

Two releases exist: the European Domark cart and the Brazilian Tec Toy cart. The European cart sits above the middle for a European-only game, loose. The look-alike risk is low. Check that the manual is included if you want a complete copy.

The Sega Genesis version

A fast, well-regarded Formula One racer that is cheap to pick up on the Genesis.

Domark published this Formula One racer in North America as Formula One and in Europe as F1, in November 1993 in both regions. Lankhor developed it, and it is based on Vroom, Lankhor's 1991 Atari ST game. This page covers the Genesis cartridge; the Master System has its own version, described above.

Mega magazine placed it 17th in its list of the top Mega Drive games of all time, and GamePro's 1997 list of great 16-bit racers named it among Genesis racing games worth voting for.

“The graphics may not be as pretty as a Virtua Racing coin-op, but as far as the Megadrive goes this is the best racing game money can buy.”

— MegaTech, August 1993

“It's the fastest four-wheel racing game for the Megadrive by miles - the turbo mode is virtually uncontrollable at full throttle.”

— MegaTech, September 1993

“The ultimate driving game on the Megadrive has to be this, the official Formula One license from Domark.”

— MegaTech, October 1993

“It's the best racing game money can buy - an incredible sensation of speed and lots of thrills 'n' spills in one-off races or a 12-race tournament.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

It was one of the most popular racing games on the Mega Drive/Genesis, mostly thanks to its smooth and fast game engine.

Mega placed it at number 17 in its Top Mega Drive Games of All Time.

  • Amiga. CU Amiga gave the Amiga version 84 percent, calling it a superb two-player game that pales a little when going solo.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle, so there is little reason to overpay. The European cart usually costs less than the US one. The cartridge has a save battery that keeps progress in some modes, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
