About Frenzy
Frenzy followed the basic paradigm set by Berzerk: the player must navigate a maze full of hostile robots. The goal of the game is to survive as long as possible and score points by killing robots and travelling from room to room. The game has no end other than the player losing all of his or her lives. The player has a gun with which to shoot the robots, and simple intelligence of the robots means that they can often be tricked into shooting one another. If the player lingers too long in a room, a bouncing smiley face (known as "Evil Otto") appears, and relentlessly chases the player. Evil Otto will destroy any robots in his way, and can move through walls.

Stern's Berzerk sequel as a Coleco cartridge, a maze shooter that period reviewers called addictive.
Frenzy was Stern Electronics' 1982 arcade sequel to Berzerk, designed by Alan McNeil, and Coleco listed the ColecoVision conversion among its arcade titles in 1983 (Electronic Games, October 1983; Joystik, September 1983). Davis & Nussrallah & Associates developed the home version, released in February 1984.
Computer Entertainer reviewed the ColecoVision port positively in February 1984, according to Wikipedia, finding it addictive and praising its graphics and gameplay. It also appeared as a ColecoVision title on Computer Entertainer's top-ten seller list in issue 2-11, at No. 8.
How it was made
Developed by Davis & Nussrallah & Associates and published by Coleco.
What the press said at the time
| Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 11 | February 1984 | Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½ |
“We found FRENZY to be one of those addictive games that's hard to put away. The graphics are very nicely done, and no two mazes are ever exactly alike.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.
How the ColecoVision version differs
In the ColecoVision port you can shoot the Robot Factory to disable it and stop its endless stream of robots. In the arcade game shooting the factory has no effect.
The Big Otto's face changes to a slight frown once you clear the room of robots, a detail found only in the ColecoVision port.
Worth knowing
- From the ColecoVision manual. Evil Otto passes through walls and takes three shots to destroy (four in Skill 4), but a faster replacement Otto then appears.
- From the ColecoVision manual. Some mazes have a feature cell (Big Otto, Power Plant, Computer or Robot Factory) at the center that you can disable for extra points.
- From the ColecoVision manual. You start with five Commandos in Skill 1 and three at other skills, earning a bonus Commando at 1000 points and another every 2000 after.
Before you buy
Plays with the standard controller and needs no overlay. It is a Coleco-published cartridge with no documented authenticity problems. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value, and the price row shows no sealed price.
