About Frog Bog

Frog Bog is a video game released by Mattel Electronics in 1982, developed by APH Technological Consulting. Players control a frog on a lily pad, competing to catch the most insects within a three-minute time limit. The challenge involves using the frog's tongue to capture flying insects while avoiding falling into the water, which would waste valuable time. The game features a dynamic day-night cycle that progressively makes insect-catching more difficult as the background transitions from morning to night, adding complexity to gameplay. The player with the most insects at the end of the time limit wins the game.

M Network's 2600 version of Mattel's frog-versus-frog fly-eating game, cheap and on Atari 50.

Frogs and Flies is the Atari 2600 conversion of Frog Bog, a 1982 Mattel Electronics game for the Intellivision. Each player controls a frog on a lily pad and tries to eat more flies than the other. The game resembles the 1978 Sega-Gremlin arcade game Frogs.

Mattel released the 2600 version under its M Network label in September 1982. APh developed it, with David Rolfe credited as designer. It is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.

How it was made

Developed by APh with David Rolfe credited as designer, and released under the M Network label in September 1982, with a PAL release in early 1984.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 8November 1982Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½

“Older kids will want to control their frog's arc and run the risk of plopping into the pond--an effect good for a few giggles. A delightful children's game--recommended.”

— Computer Entertainer, November 1982

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Before you buy

Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Loose carts are inexpensive. Note that the 2600 cart is titled Frogs and Flies, not Frog Bog. It is listed under both M Network and Telegames, with a PAL release in 1984, so check the label for the publisher. Boxed copies cost several times the loose price.
