About Ghost House

The player controls Mick, a young vampire hunter out to destroy five vampires in each stage before proceeding to the next. Everything is out to stop Mick from completing this tasks and making his way out of the mansion. The player has to punch, or jump on, his enemies to defeat them. Arrows will be flying from either direction and will attempt to hit Mick on the head, and he must either duck or jump on them for extra points. Players can jump or touch lights to freeze everything on screen for a few seconds. Rather than punching, the player can collect a sword on the lower level by jumping on it as it flies past him.

An early Sega platformer on a Sega Card, with a Japanese version that costs far more than the US one.

Ghost House is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Sega, loosely based on Sega's 1982 arcade game Monster Bash. It came out in Japan on 21 April 1986, in North America in September 1986 and in Europe in August 1987. Tec Toy released it in Brazil in 1991. Hiroshi Kawaguchi composed the music.

It first appeared on a Sega Card, and it was later re-released on cartridge.

Sega Pro Issue 19May 199345%

“Ghost House's graphics are of the cute style - big heads, big eyes and little bodies - the sound is very jolly, and at its cheap price the addictive gameplay provides fun at a price every Sega owner can afford.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Some things in life were never meant to be. This ghostly (ghastly) encounter requires little skill and is aimed at very, very young players.”

— Sega Pro, May 1993

Before you buy

Check which format you are buying. The main listing is the Sega Card, which needs the card slot of the original Master System or the Mark III; the Master System II has no card slot. A European cartridge version is listed separately. Loose, the European copy usually costs less than the US one, but a complete one costs more. The Japanese release costs far more than the US one, loose and complete, and is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. For a copy at this price, ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page, if the seller can supply one.
