A seaplane shooter in the 194X mold: handsome for 1991, light on ideas, and priced as a mid-level collector's cart.

SNK made Ghost Pilots as a vertically scrolling shooter that borrows elements from Capcom's 194X series, with the twist that you fly a seaplane. It reached the arcade in January 1991 and the home AES in the July 1991 launch window. Famitsu's four reviewers scored the Neo Geo version 24 out of 40, which fits the picture of a competent but unremarkable shooter.

SNK's late-1991 ads named it, alongside Magician Lord and Crossed Swords, among the games that showed off the system's 65,536-color graphics. It supports one or two players, but it is a modest entry among the system's shooters.

Before you buy

Med risk. The Japanese and US carts sell for similar money, with the complete copy worth much more than a loose cart, so look for a complete one with the manual and case. For a cart at this level, ask a seller for a photo of the board: NEO-AEG markings and gold edge fingers point to a real AES board, and an arcade board in a repro shell is the documented fraud. It also came out on Neo Geo CD.
