About Golden Axe Warrior

World peace is at stake! Death Adder, a wicked giant, has stolen the nine crystals from the kingdom of Firewood and has hidden them in nine labyrinths that he has created. These nine magic crystals protected the people from evil – especially from Death Adder's grasp. But now that the crystals are lost, the world is defenseless! Someone must put an end to the fiend's realm of darkness, death and destruction! Do you have what it takes to bring back peace and happiness? Trek through deep, dark forests and sail across vast, stormy seas. Chop down trees with your Battle Axe and move rocks with your magic spells to find secret caves. When you take on Death Adder's gruesome monsters, think only of winning – or else you won't find the nine crystals. And when you do, you'll find the Golden Axe – the only weapon that can crush Death Adder!

A Zelda-style spin-off that critics found tedious in 1991, now one of the priciest carts on the system.

Golden Axe Warrior was developed and published by Sega and released in North America in April 1991 and in Europe in May 1991. It is a spin-off of the Golden Axe series that swaps the brawler for top-down adventure play: you cross an overworld and dungeons, defeat enemies, collect items and find secrets as a warrior avenging his parents' death, with towns and role-playing elements added in. The aim is to defeat the tyrant Death Adder and recover nine missing crystals.

Reception was mixed, largely because of how closely it resembles The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II. Mean Machines was unkind, judging the release poor and its role-playing action tedious.

How it was made

Developed and published by Sega. Gen Adachi and Takako Kawaguchi are credited as designers, Pochi Nakamori as programmer and Chikako Kamatani as composer.

Before you buy

Sega sold the US copies in European boxes with a UPC sticker over the European barcode, so look for the sticker and a box with text in several languages before paying the US price. The European cart is much cheaper both loose and complete. For a copy at this price, ask for a photo of the board and compare it with the board listed on this page. The game saves to a battery inside the cart, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair.
