About Golf

This game features a simplified type of golf. The area of the hole is rendered in light green, all areas outside the hole are rendered in a medium blue. On the larger holes the green is rendered as a dark green hole circle with the hole near the center. There are several obstacles that can appear, including trees, sand traps, and water features. On difficulty A, balls that go out of bounds stay there and must be hit back in; on difficulty B, the balls stick to the edge of the area. Balls hit near the water can soar over it, or if they land into the water, the ball is placed back where the shot was taken. Balls hit into sand traps will stick to the sides of the traps, and it takes a more powerful swing to free the ball. The player only uses one club - the amount of time the fire button is held down determines how much power the ball will be hit with, and how far it will go. The player's golfer can be moved anywhere on the field, with his golf club always facing the ball. On the larger hole the goal is to hit the ball on to the green. Once the player reaches the green, the game will zoom in on the green. The green is rendered as a light green circle, with a black dot as the actual hole. Once the ball reaches a hole, the player moves on to the next hole.

Michael Lorenzen's first Atari game, a blocky nine-hole golf cart that is cheap and modestly enjoyable.

Golf is Atari's 1980 golf game for one or two players, playing nine holes with obstacles. It was Michael Lorenzen's first game for Atari: on his first day he was told to study a competitor's golf game and duplicate it, and the result shares some features with Computer Golf for the Odyssey 2. He recalled the development as stressful, as he worked to fit the game into a 2 KB cartridge.

Retrospective reviews have been indifferent. Brett Alan Weiss noted that its blocky graphics and simple sound hide an enjoyably challenging game.

How it was made

Programmed by Michael Lorenzen, his first game at Atari, and released in July 1980. Sears also sold it. Lorenzen later made Circus Atari and went on to work at Activision and Accolade.

Worth knowing

  • Dropped from catalog, 1983. The Video Game Update reported in February 1983: "Several older games have been dropped out of the catalog. Among those are GOLF, HANGMAN, BASIC PROGRAMMING, HOME RUN, OTHELLO, OUTLAW" and Human Cannonball.
  • First $9.95 discount. In September/October 1982 the Atari Club's members-only price list cut this, one of Atari's oldest titles, to $9.95.
  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Golf (CX2634) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95. The same list groups it among the "cartridge titles introduced in 1980".

Before you buy

Low risk. Three listings are priced: the standard cart, a Tele-Games cart from Sears and a Text Label cart. Loose, all are cheap. Boxed Tele-Games copies cost the most, so check which label and box a listing shows before paying for a complete one.
