Wizard Video's movie tie-in, where a hand-written label can be more genuine than a printed one.

Tim Martin programmed Halloween with fellow ex-Apollo employee Robert Barber after Games by Apollo went bankrupt, and Wizard Video released it in 1983. It uses the 1978 film's poster as cover art and its main music theme, but the game never names any of the film's characters, including the killer.

Wizard reportedly liquidated leftover stock, some of it with no label or with HALLOWEEN written on a sticker by hand. That history makes it one of the stranger authentication problems on the platform.

What the press said at the time

Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 2 No. 1November 19833 joysticks

“Wizard's Halloween is that rarest of video games licensed from another medium: It not only offers exciting gameplay, it's remarkably faithful to the spirit of the 1978 film”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, November 1983

Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

Worth knowing

  • The film's theme music. Electronic Fun's November 1983 review noted "the movie's eerie theme music (which, by the way, has been perfectly reproduced for the game)".

Before you buy

High risk. Reproductions circulate, which is why RFGeneration published a 2013 authentication guide to Wizard Video carts. Genuine copies can be unlabeled or hand-labeled, so the sticker proves little either way. Check the shell and board instead: genuine Wizard carts have grip areas near the end label and no internal dust flap, and the board should be the off-white Apollo AP200. Reject glossy labels, which genuine Wizard labels were not, and any label with a Hozer logo or a torn bottom-right corner. AtariAge rates the two variants 7 and 8.
