About Hangman

Hangman was one of the eleven Atari 2600 titles that were part of the second wave of games released in 1978. It is based on the old words guessing game played with paper and pen. The player must guess which letters compose a word. Every wrong guess adds to the diagram of a man being hung, or in the case of this game, a monkey hanging from a bar. Eleven wrong guesses ends the game. Games can be played as one or two player games, and different grade levels of words. Two players can even provide the words for one another.

A 1978 word game from Alan Miller, cheap under its Atari name and pricier as Sears' Spelling.

Hangman is a puzzle game based on the pen-and-paper word game, designed by Alan Miller and released by Atari in October 1978. It has single-player and multiplayer modes. It is a simple cartridge, and most buyers are filling a gap in an early-Atari collection.

Worth knowing

  • Dropped from catalog, 1983. The Video Game Update reported in February 1983: "Several older games have been dropped out of the catalog. Among those are GOLF, HANGMAN, BASIC PROGRAMMING, HOME RUN, OTHELLO, OUTLAW" and Human Cannonball.
  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Hangman (CX2662) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.

Before you buy

Low risk. Check which label you are looking at. The Atari copies, including the text-label variant, are common and cost little. Sears sold the same game in its Tele-Games line as Spelling, and the Spelling cart sells for more loose and boxed. It is the same game, so buy the Spelling label for the collection, not for anything different on screen. No reproductions are documented.
