Atari's 1982 eyes-in-the-dark adventure, an early horror game that is cheap and on Atari 50.
Haunted House is a 2600-only adventure game programmed by James Andreasen and released by Atari in February 1982. You are a pair of eyes in the dark, exploring a mansion for the pieces of an urn while bats, tarantulas and a ghost roam the halls. It was among the first games to let the player scroll between large parts of the game world.
Contemporary magazines such as The Space Gamer and Electronic Games liked it, while others found it difficult and unintuitive. Some critics call it one of the earliest survival horror games, though others argue it lacks what defined that genre later. It is on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.
How it was made
Programmed by James Andreasen and released by Atari in February 1982, with a PAL release later that year. Sears also sold it.
What the press said at the time
| Game Informer | 7.75/10 |
“This game's audio-visual trimmings are excellent. It is much more atmospheric than Adventure … Haunted House is one of the most intriguing and novel videogame cartridges to appear in some time.”
“this one are also on the simple side, but the effect of creeping through darkened rooms is very well done.”

Before you buy
Low risk; a common cart. Two listings are priced: the standard cart and a Tele-Games cart from Sears. Loose they cost about the same, while boxed Tele-Games copies cost a little more. Sealed standard copies cost noticeably more than boxed ones, so check the wrap closely if you are paying for one.
