A funny, inventive ghost game from Electronic Arts that has become one of the pricier US Genesis carts.

Haunting Starring Polterguy is a comedy-horror game from Electronic Arts, released in North America in October 1993 and in Europe in November 1993. You play Polterguy, the ghost of a teenager, who haunts four houses by bringing household objects to life to scare the Sardini family out. It was designed by the team behind the arcade games Paperboy, Cyberball and Rampart.

GameFan found it unique and interesting, combining action, in the traps and the hunt for ectoplasm, with the strategy of making the most of limited ectoplasm.

What the press said at the time

“Haunting is a unique adventure that’s more fun than frightening. The wacky fright’ems and the Sardini’s reaction to them are a real scream.”

— Game Informer, September/October 1993

“Polterguy successfully delivers on graphics but lacks the diversity and play mechanics that make a great action game.”

— Diehard GameFan, October 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

GamePro and Game Players quotes praising the game were printed as blurbs on the North American box art.

GameFan said the game blends action with strategy, since you must plan attacks on the Sardini family to make the best use of your limited ecto.

  • PlayStation Portable. A PlayStation Portable port was released in 2006 on EA Replay.

Before you buy

Among US carts this is one of the pricier ones, well above the middle. The European cart usually costs less than the US one, both loose and complete, so it is the cheaper way to get a copy. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
