About Heavy Nova

Heavy Nova is a 1991 action game for the Sharp X68000 by Micronet. It was ported to the Sega Mega-CD as one of the system's two launch titles (the other being Wolf Team's Sol-Feace); the Mega-CD port was not released outside Japan. Micronet subsequently ported it to the Sega Mega Drive for an American release in 1992. You play as a giant mech beating up other mechs of various sizes. A punches and B kicks. Up rockets up for as long as the button is held; you will eventually come back down.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega CD version ($7).

Also released on: Sharp X1 · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Sharp X68000. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A robot-fighter that mixes platform stages with one-on-one boss fights, cheap among US carts.

Heavy Nova was developed and published by Micronet, with a North American Genesis release in December 1991. You play a robot operator working toward the top rank, piloting a robot called a Heavy DOLL through platform stages in a combat training camp and then fighting other Heavy DOLLs as end-of-level bosses. Mean Machines previewed it in 1991 as a one-on-one combat game in which two robots fight.

The Sega CD version

A robot fighter that launched with the Mega-CD in Japan and left British magazines unimpressed.

This is the Mega-CD version of Heavy Nova, published by Micronet. It came out only in Japan, on 12 December 1991, the same day the Mega-CD itself launched there. It mixes platform stages with one-on-one fights between robots, and it also appeared on the Genesis and the X68000.

Reviews in the British press were cool. Computer and Video Games, in March 1992, credited the slick animation and the sound but thought the game nothing special. Sega Pro found a fantastic introduction and little else, with poor gameplay in the one-on-one robot fights, and Mega Tech called it slow, with moves that are hard to access. MEGA's Summer Special in 1993 used the word appalling about it in passing.

“Heavy Nova certainly looks Impressive and Ihe first thing you'll see when it loads up is a beautiful animation”

— Computer + Video Games, March 1992

“This is the Mega-CD's first beat 'em up, and a real let down it is to. The game can be played as a single player slap 'em around cum adventure, or as a two-player head to head battle.”

— MegaTech, May 1992

“A steaming great rumbler of a dollop of a mockery of a joke of a game. With about two moves with which to develop your own style of play, this is one of the worst sad, shambling, mockeries of a beat-’em-up you’ll ever have”

— Mega, July 1993

“A fantastic introduction, as with the majority of Mega-CD games but little else to offer. Two fighting robots in a one-on-one battle with terrible gameplay. Hardly oněmil and just about bearable.”

— Sega Pro, February 1994

Before you buy

This is the Japanese disc, so it needs a Japanese Mega-CD. Its loose price sits below the middle among the Japan-only Sega CD releases. Copies sell infrequently, so any price rests on few sales; check that the disc and case carry the same title.
