A Sonic-style platformer starring a pirate seal that did not impress critics, yet it is one of the pricier US carts.
High Seas Havoc is a platformer from Data East, with Havoc the seal as its hero. It was released as Captain Lang in Japan on 22 April 1994 and simply as Havoc in Europe on 16 September 1994; North America got it as High Seas Havoc in January 1994. It also ran in arcades on a Genesis-based cabinet.
Critics noticed the resemblance to Sega's mascot right away. Game Players pointed out that the blue animal hero and rolling hills look like Sonic, and Sega Pro, reviewing an import copy in September 1994, called it a dull Sonic clone, while allowing that some of the backgrounds and sprites might cheer you up.
What the press said at the time
“High Seas Havoc isn't a bad game, by any means, but it's a bit like buying Brotherhood of Man records in the age of punk.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
Sega Pro called the import a dull Sonic clone, and Destructoid later also called it a rip-off of Sonic the Hedgehog.

- Arcade. An arcade release also exists, running on a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis-based arcade cabinet.
Before you buy
Among US carts it is one of the pricier ones. The European cart usually costs about the same loose and a little more complete, while the Japanese Captain Lang cart usually costs about three times as much and has a different cartridge shape. It is valuable enough to check carefully: ask for a photo of the board, and treat a flat Western-style shell with a notch as a warning sign.
