About Hockey

This game, as the name suggests, is a hockey simulation which is very similar to Mario Lemieux Hockey. There are 22 teams to choose from which are based on the NHL 91 line up though they can be changed if the player wishes. You control 1 player at a time and the CPU controls the rest of your team though you can switch to a different player at any time if the need arises. There is also a fight penalty system where you have to continually punch the an opponent in order to proceed. The game is viewed from an isometric perspective as if you were sat in one of the crowd seats.

Two-player ComLynx ice hockey, and one of the sports titles that actually justifies the link cable.

Alpine Software developed it and Atari published it in 1992. It is not NHL-licensed, so it uses real city names with invented teams — a contemporary reviewer noted the uniform colours are sometimes dead-on and sometimes wildly not, singling out a Montreal side playing in hot pink. The fighting scenes are the animation showcase, complete with digitised grunting.

German reviewers flagged the real problem: the sprites are small, the puck is often hard to pick out against the ice, and you control only one player at a time. Head-to-head is the reason to own it. Community lists report ComLynx support, though the period Lynx FAQ does not cover the title, so we list that as reported rather than confirmed.

How it was made

Developed by Ed Ringler and his team at Alpine Software. GamePro #31 credited them in February 1992 as "noted personal computer sports game guru" and framed the cartridge as a handheld sibling of Mario Lemieux Hockey for the Sega Genesis, sharing its depth of statistics.

Worth knowing

A management sim underneath the fighting. You manage any of 22 teams across four divisions, each with its own scoring, passing, defence, defence speed, checking, checking strength, goalie speed, goalie intelligence and fighting ratings. Team stats can be regenerated at random or ranked in skill order, and a password restores a stat set later.
Rules are optional, and fights have their own control scheme. Playing with Rules on imposes offsides, two-line passing, icing and delay of game. Press B and you signal readiness to fight; the Lynx then cuts to a close-up of the two players where the joypad moves and ducks and the buttons throw jabs, roundhouses, uppercuts and "the infamous low blow". The loser spends three minutes in the box.
