An early Genesis brawler that several critics found dull, but a cheap cart with a launch-era place in the system's history.

On the Genesis this is Last Battle, a side-scrolling martial arts beat 'em up from Sega that was one of the six games in the US Genesis launch lineup. The Japanese release is Hokuto no Ken: Shinseikimatsu Kyuseishu Densetsu, based on the Fist of the North Star manga and anime. The international version did not keep the license, so its graphics and characters' names were changed. It came out in Japan on 1 July 1989, in North America in August 1989 and in Europe in 1990.

Computer Entertainer's 1989 review was mildly positive, praising visuals that showed some of the Genesis's 16-bit ability, while saying nothing about it was especially original. Mean Machines Sega was harsh, calling it a failure on two counts: it did not show off the Mega Drive's abilities and was not enjoyable either.

“Last Battle reminds me of a souped-up Altered Beast. … but the game wasn’t that exciting.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, 1990

“This is boring with a capital 'C' (for CRAP). Even taking into account that it's three years old, the gameplay sucks.”

— Sega Force, August 1992

“Do yourself a favour, and plug this into anything but vour Sega.”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“Amongst one of the first Megadrive games to appear, this is a failure on two countsrit neither shows off any of the Megadrive's capabilities nor is an enjoyable game in its own right. Do yourself a favour, and plug this into anything but your Sega.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Western release dropped the Fist of the North Star license, so character names and fighting styles were changed.

The blood and gore of the Japanese original was edited out of the Western version, so enemies fly offscreen instead of exploding.

In 1992 MegaTech called it a failure on two counts, neither showing off the Mega Drive's capabilities nor being enjoyable in its own right.

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs less than the US one, while the Japanese cart usually costs far more and has a different cartridge shape. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
