About Hoshi wo Sagashite...
The game revolves around a dog and his family. Being one of the earliest adventure games for an 8-bit console system, the game tends to be simplistic compared to today's adventure games. As a Japan exclusive video game, literacy is required in the Japanese language in order to play the game. The character seems to have an anime-like influence as the people are watching out for the dog that is sitting on a log. Among the human beings, however, is an alien-like creature. While the literal translation would be Searching the Stars..., the actual alternative title is The Story of Mio.

A Japanese-only Phantasy Star-universe adventure that became better known once fans translated it.
Hoshi wo Sagashite... is a menu-driven adventure developed and published by Sega, released in Japan on April 2, 1988. It uses the same science fiction setting as Phantasy Star. You play a space pilot who is given an egg as a gift for his girlfriend; it hatches into an alien creature named Mio, and the rest of the game is about finding clues to where Mio came from.
Miki Morimoto handled the narrative and planning, her first Master System game as a planner, and Rieko Kodama did the graphics. Retro Gamer's Nick Thorpe wrote in 2025 that the game has become more renowned in recent years thanks to an English fan translation. One reviewer found its main weakness to be unintuitive choices needed to advance the story.
Before you buy
This came out only in Japan, so the cartridge is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. The text is in Japanese. Loose, it sits a little below the middle of the Japanese-only releases, and the look-alike risk is low.
