About Human Cannonball

In Human Cannonball your goal is to fire a man out of a cannon and have him land in a bucket of water. To do this you need to adjust your cannon so the position, angle, and firing speed are just right. You score a point for each successful landing, and the game ends after seven attempts. Several game variations are included which allow you to have the position, angle and speed all set by the player, or have one or more of these in a fixed position, or have one or more of these randomly set by the computer. If you wish to make the game more challenging, you can also set a moving wall in front of the bucket which will make your timing more critical.

A simple early Atari artillery game that costs very little, unless the label says Cannon Man.

Human Cannonball arrived in March 1979, in the first wave of VCS games after the nine launch titles. You fire a performer out of a cannon and try to land them in a container of water perched on a tower. The programmer is unknown, but the game is based on Cannonball, an arcade game Owen Rubin designed that was never released. Cliff Spohn, who painted many early Atari covers, did the box art.

It was also among the first 2600 games Atari discontinued. That has not made the Atari cartridge scarce: standard copies are among the cheapest in the library.

How it was made

Developed and published by Atari, Inc. from Owen Rubin's unreleased Cannonball arcade design; the 2600 programmer is not credited.

Worth knowing

  • Dropped from catalog, 1983. The Video Game Update reported in February 1983: "Several older games have been dropped out of the catalog. Among those are GOLF, HANGMAN, BASIC PROGRAMMING, HOME RUN, OTHELLO, OUTLAW" and Human Cannonball.
  • Club price cut, 1982. By summer 1982 the Atari Club's Cartridge Checklist had already cut this launch-era cartridge to $12.95, while most other basic titles stayed at $22.95.
  • 1981 dealer price. Atari's confidential retailer price list for January 1 to June 1, 1981 lists Human Cannonball (CX2627) in its basic tier: dealers paid $14.00 against a suggested retail price of $22.95.

Before you buy

Check which label you are looking at. The Atari picture-label and text-label cartridges are common and inexpensive. Sears sold the same game through its Tele-Games line as Cannon Man, and that label sells for far more. Because the game inside is the same, the printed label is the whole premium, so on a Cannon Man copy look for die-cut rounded corners and a non-glossy finish, compare it against known scans, and ask whether the label is original. Plain Atari copies carry little counterfeit concern.
