Atari's speedboat combat racer, and a good showcase for the hardware's scaling.
NuFX developed the 1992 conversion. The premise is better than the genre suggests: enemy thieves are stealing artifacts that each hide a piece of a secret weapon, so the government issues you an experimental speedboat and you run the rivers delivering contraband. The Lynx’s hardware sprite scaling does real work selling the speed and the closing obstacles.
The cartridge carries a licensing detail worth knowing: Hydra was an Atari GAMES coin-op licensed to Atari Corporation through Tengen. The two Ataris had been separate companies since 1984, and a good share of the Lynx’s arcade library is licensed-in rather than owned — which is a large part of why so little of it can be reissued today.
What the press said at the time
“Animation is hot, employing the Lynx's versatile zoom capabilities to create the impression of real 3-D depth. Sound effects are great, and the music, complete with fuzzed drum tracks, is right out of a spy flick.”
“The Lynx version of Hydra is said to be superior to the arcade original.”

Worth knowing
- A boat that becomes an aircraft at the press of Option 1. On water the Hydra hydroplanes — push down to bring its nose up to angle. Press Option 1 and it takes to the air as "an altitude-limited surface-effect vehicle", at which point all four directions of the joypad engage so you can climb, bank and dive.
- The arms dealers have names. Between its nine missions you spend prize money at a base store "run by one of a variety of seedy characters, with names like Ziggy and Bingo", buying cannons, nukes, fuel, shields, homers, boosts and a six-way shot. Your rival throughout is the pilot of the Black Hydra.
Before you buy
Cheap, low-risk, narrow spread between loose and complete. A good demonstration cart for what the Lynx could do.
