Ikari Warriors on Wikipedia

Ikari Warriors, known as Ikari in Japan, is a 1986 run and gun video game developed and published by SNK for arcades. It was released in North America by Tradewest. Amongst the numerous Commando clones on the market, Ikari Warriors was distinguished by its unique control style with rotary joysticks and a two-player cooperative mode. The rotary joystick controls were in turn based on SNK's earlier TNK III (1985). Ikari was originally intended to be an official licensed adaptation of the film Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), but SNK were initially unable to acquire the rights to the film.

Atari 2600 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

One of Atari's last four new 2600 games, a 1991 conversion of SNK's arcade hit, and a cheap way to own the console's final chapter.

Ikari Warriors started as SNK's 1986 arcade run-and-gun, known for its rotary joysticks and two-player cooperative mode. The 2600 version was designed by Dan Kitchen and developed by Imagineering for Atari Corporation.

Atari Corp. announced it in 1990, and it shipped in March 1991 alongside MotoRodeo, Sentinel and Xenophobe. Those four were Atari's last new 2600 games in North America, which gives this cart a place in the console's history that the game alone would not.

How it was made

Designed by Dan Kitchen and developed by Imagineering for Atari Corp., which released it in March 1991 as one of its final four new 2600 games in North America.

How the Atari 2600 version differs

Atari Corporation released the 2600 conversion in 1990, alongside a 7800 version, making it one of the last games published for the console in its original era.

  • NES. The NES version lets players commandeer helicopters as well as tanks; the helicopters carry a spread gun and a cannon and can fly over water.
  • Amstrad CPC. Computer and Video Games praised the Amstrad conversion, saying its graphics were as close as possible to the arcade machine.
  • ZX Spectrum. A ZX Spectrum version by David Perry was scheduled for November 1986 but never released; Elite later published a different Spectrum conversion in 1988.

Before you buy

Low risk. As a late Atari Corp release it uses the universal 2600/7800 shell with no dust door and a cheaper gray label. That is genuine, not a sign of a fake. Loose, complete and sealed copies are all inexpensive, so buy the most complete copy you find.
