An early console rugby game that is very cheap on a European cartridge.

International Rugby was made by Tiertex and published by Domark, and came out in Europe in October 1993. Mean Machines Sega announced it as the first console rugby game, with all the rules of the sport included, and later previewed it as a mix of squad management and match play.

There is no US cartridge to buy, so the European cart is the one to look for.

“The first rugby game for the Mega Drive and not a bad little effort it is too.”

— Mega, May 1994

“Scrabbling about in the mud never seemed like much fun to me, but Domark are trying … realism and atmosphere of reál rugby, if such a thing is possible.”

— Sega Pro, November 1993

“As the name suggests, this Kick Off-esque rugby simulation lets you play in the big three international rugby tournaments”

— MegaTech, December 1993

“The first rugby game for the Mega Drive and not a bad little effort it is too.”

— Mega Drive Advanced Gaming, January 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Mega Drive version fared better than the Amiga one in the press, with Mega awarding 80% and MegaTech 75%.

It was also released in North America, but only through the Sega Channel service.

Also on other platforms

Amiga

  • Amiga. Amiga Power gave the Amiga version 2%, citing spelling errors, a clock that kept running during pause, and frequent crashes in long matches.

Before you buy

Buy the European cart. In its group of carts without a US release it is among the cheapest. Any US-style cartridge of this game would be a modern reproduction or homebrew cart.
