About Jack Nicklaus' Power Challenge Golf

Power Challenge Golf is a golf simulation game, based on Accolade's own Golf & Course Design from the year prior, and featuring both of the courses from that title (Sherwood and English Turn) as well as one additional new course (Baltusrol). The game offers stroke and skins play for up to four players, as well as a driving range and a practice mode. The course editor from the PC version, however, has been removed.

A well-regarded Genesis golf game with a save battery, and one of the cheapest US carts to pick up.

Jack Nicklaus' Power Challenge Golf is a golf game from Microsmiths, published by Accolade. It came out in North America and Europe in July 1993. It is a scaled-down Genesis version of Accolade's PC game Jack Nicklaus Golf & Course Design: Signature Edition, without the course designer. Accolade and Nicklaus's staff worked together on the initial design, and Nicklaus gave final approval to the project, including the manual and packaging.

One reviewer called it easily the best golf simulation on the Genesis, praising the graphics, the variety of golf shots and the digitized sounds.

What the press said at the time

“This Genesis cart almost has it all. Jack packs enough features to keep any duffer entertained for hours, but the game’s not quite as polished as its glitzy competitor, PGA Tour Golf II by EA Sports”

— GamePro, August 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits below the middle. The European cart usually costs more than the US one loose, but about the same complete. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it for some modes, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake.
