A standard Genesis platformer with an elemental-ring twist that MegaTech found short on staying power.

Sega developed and published Jewel Master. You play a mage who casts spells with elemental rings across five side-scrolling levels. It reached Japan on 30 August 1991, North America in 1991 and Europe on 21 November 1991.

MegaTech called it a fairly standard platformer with a few original features, with neither the challenge nor the addictiveness to hold you for more than a few sessions.

How it was made

It began as Blade of the Great Elements, a game by Amusement for the Japanese X68000 computer. After complicated circumstances the project moved to the Genesis and became Jewel Master.

“Jewel Master has several things going for it; the bosses are unique, the ring combinations make you think, and there is plenty of action.”

— Game Informer, January-February 1992

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Insanely easy and not very exciting. … Not really a jewel. More of a matching decanter set.”

— Mega, July 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts this sits above the median. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs more. The Japanese Mega Drive cart usually costs somewhat more than the US one and has a different cartridge shape. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
