About J.League Pro Striker

J.League Pro Striker is a 1993 football game for the Sega Mega Drive by Sega. It was the first in a long line of J. League games developed by Sega after acquiring the license to the franchise for their consoles (but it was not the first J.League game on a Sega system — Game Arts's J. League Champion Soccer, released a few months earlier on the MD, was).

A Japanese Mega Drive football game with a battery save and two separate cartridges, aimed at buyers who want J.League soccer.

J.League Pro Striker is a soccer game from Sega that came out only in Japan, on 18 June 1993. A second cartridge, J.League Pro Striker Kanzenban, followed on 17 December 1993. Sega Pro's German edition named it in early 1994 among the good football games that each lacked something, when it introduced FIFA International Soccer.

It is a Mega Drive game, and both cartridges are separate releases with their own entries on this page.

“The main point is that Sega really should release this game officially over here so that soccer-starved Megadrivers can make the choice for themselves!”

— MegaTech, July 1993

“The best-looking and most playable soccer game available for the Megadrive, although only available on import at the moment and full of Jap text. Fantastic fun”

— MegaTech, September 1993

“The many options and the amazing playability make this the best footy game on the Megadrive at the moment. … It's a shame that all the text is in Japanese.”

— MegaTech, November 1993

“The style is Kick-Off, but the graphics and player animations are miles better and the ball movement has been captured perfectly. It's compatible with the Sega Tap too, so up to four players can enjoy the high energy footie action. Only drawback is, all the text is in Japanese.”

— MegaTech, February 1994

Before you buy

Japanese cartridges are a different shape and do not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot. A Japanese Mega Drive cart has a notch on the left and ridged edges, and a flat Western-style shell with a notch is a repro sign. Compare it with the board listed on this page before buying an expensive copy. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with Sega's Team Player.
