A one-on-one basketball game with slam-dunk and three-point contests that is very cheap, however you rate its play.

This is the Genesis / Mega Drive version of Jordan vs. Bird, Electronic Arts' half-court game for one or two players in which you choose to be Michael or Larry. It adds a slam-dunk contest featuring Jordan and a three-point shootout showcasing Bird, plus an arcade mode. It came out in North America in 1992, in Europe in April 1992 and in Japan on 24 September 1993.

Opinions have differed. Video Games & Computer Entertainment said in May 1992 that it was arguably the best version of One-On-One Electronic Arts had released, while Mega later put it seventh in a list of the ten worst Mega Drive games.

What the press said at the time

Mean Machines Sega Issue 3December 199240%

“Jordan vs. Bird on the Genesis is arguably the best version of One-On-One ever released by EA for any computer-or video-game system.”

— VideoGames & Computer Entertainment, May 1992

“This is a very well executed and put together game … It's way too brief - and as a result ends up short.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, May 1992

“Don't be fooled by the star names. This isn't basket ball - it's a cut-down one-on-one version. To its credit it has many options to tweak with, but this doesn't stop the game from being dull and boring to play, with very little in the way of fun offered. Avoid,”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

How the Sega Genesis version differs

A 1992 preview described the Genesis game as a new version of the old Dr. J and Larry Bird game with a slam-dunk contest and three-point shootout.

Before you buy

Among US carts a loose copy is one of the cheaper ones. A loose European cart usually costs much less than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs about the same. The Japanese cart usually costs less loose but more complete, and its different cartridge shape needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot.
