About Jungle Hunt
Jungle Hunt is side-scrolling arcade game produced and released by Taito in 1982. It was initially released as Jungle King. Jungle Hunt is one of the first video games to use parallax scrolling. The player controls an unnamed jungle explorer sporting a pith helmet and a safari suit. The player attempts to rescue his girl from a tribe of hungry cannibals by swinging from vine to vine, swimming a crocodile-infested river, jumping over or ducking beneath rolling rocks, then releasing the girl before she is lowered into a boiling cauldron. Home versions were released for the Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64, ColecoVision, VIC-20, and IBM PC. The PC version was developed by Sierra On-Line and is incompatible with everything except an original IBM PC/XT with a CGA video card. In the Atari-ported versions the hero is named Sir Dudley, and the girl, married to Sir Dudley, is Lady Penelope.

Atari's conversion of Taito's vine-swinging arcade game, common, cheap and easy to like.
Jungle Hunt began as a 1982 Taito arcade game first released as Jungle King, then modified and renamed after a dispute over the hero's resemblance to Tarzan. You swing from vine to vine, swim a crocodile river, dodge rolling boulders and jump the captors to rescue a woman. The arcade original is one of the first games with parallax scrolling.
Atari published the Atari 2600 version in July 1983, with a PAL release the same year. GCC developed it, with Mike Feinstein and John Allred credited as designers. Atari's home versions star a British explorer named Sir Dudley.
How it was made
Developed by GCC for Atari, with Mike Feinstein and John Allred credited as designers. Released in North America in July 1983, with a PAL release in the third quarter of 1983.
What the press said at the time

“Activision's Pitfall certainly seems to have exerted at least some influence on it. … the vine-swinging is as close to automatic as it could possibly be without removing all traces of gamelike action.”
“Atari has done a great job of translating this arcade hit, considering the limitations of the 2600 system. All the key elements of the coin-op are here, although in simpler form.”
“What they left out, though, was the challenge. I don't know about you, but I don't enjoy engaging in a contest in which the final outcome is practically decided right from the start.”
“Jungle Hunt is a fun, chal- lenging game, which shouldn't disappoint many purchasers. If you like the arcade game (either Jungle Hunt or the original Jungle King), you will like this version.”
Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks. Video Games Player graded games like a report card, A+ down to C-.

How the Atari 2600 version differs
In the Atari-branded versions, including the 2600 cartridge, the hero is a British explorer named Sir Dudley and the woman he rescues is his wife, Lady Penelope.
Video Games Player gave the VCS version a B+ and called it quite good given the console's limits, but Electronic Fun called it disappointing next to the 5200 version.

- Atari 5200. Electronic Fun rated the 5200 port 3 out of 4, saying it looks and plays better than the VCS version and keeps much of the arcade challenge.
