About Karate

Karate is a video game for the Atari 2600 originally published by Ultravision in 1982 for NTSC systems, then re-released in the latter half of the 1980s by Froggo. Supposedly the game was designed by black belt Joseph Amelio. In 1991, Digital Press chose Karate as one of the worst Atari 2600 games of all time.

Karate on Wikipedia

Karate Champ, released in Japan as Karate, is a 1984 fighting game developed and published by Data East for arcades. The player utilizes dual-joystick controls to input various moves, in order to defeat enemies in a best-of-three matches format. The game was commercially successful, especially in the United States where it was the highest-grossing arcade game of 1985 and the best-selling home computer game up until 1989. It established and popularized the one-on-one fighting game genre, for which it is considered one of the most influential games of all time.

Atari 2600 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

Named one of the worst 2600 games ever made, and still among the most expensive when it has the right label on it.

Ultravision published Karate for NTSC systems in 1982, and Froggo re-released it in the latter half of the 1980s. It is the same game under two publishers, which is why the price ranges from a few dollars to hundreds. The design is credited, with some doubt in the sources, to black belt Joseph Amelio.

Digital Press chose it in 1991 as one of the worst Atari 2600 games of all time. Nobody pays the Ultravision price for the gameplay.

Before you buy

Check which publisher's copy you are looking at. The Froggo reissue is common and cheap. The Ultravision original is the premium variant, rated 10 by AtariAge in both of its shells, a T-case and a square case. Because the game inside is the same, the Ultravision shell is your main check: confirm it is one of those two Ultravision cases and that the label matches AtariAge's scans. No sold-as-original fakes are documented, but a re-shelled or relabeled Froggo cart is the obvious risk.
