A cute Sega run-and-gun that burns bright at first; the European cart costs much more than the US one, and the Japanese loose cart costs noticeably more.
Sega's Genesis cartridge is called Mystic Defender in the West and Kujaku Ō 2: Gen'eijō in Japan, where it was based on the anime and manga Kujaku Ō. It is a two-dimensional action run-and-gun, a sequel to SpellCaster on the Master System, with music by Chikako Kamatani. It came out in Japan on 25 November 1989, in North America in December 1989 and in Europe in 1990.
Sega Pro rated it as a difficult but addictive blasting frenzy with cute Oriental graphics and sound, though it felt the appeal does not last, and a later issue called it a boring wander once the first couple of plays are over.

“Ghouls *n' Gnosts clone lacks the oomph to keep you coming back for more.”
“A blasting frenzy for the first couple of plays, but it soon tums into nothing more than a boring wander through the far eastern undergrowth.”

Before you buy
Among US carts the loose cart sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs much more than the US one, both loose and complete. The Japanese cart usually costs a good deal more loose and about the same complete, and its cartridge is a different shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter or removing two plastic tabs in its slot.
