About Lemmings 2: The Tribes

By now, you'll probably be aware of the horrible plight the Lemmings face. Not only do they have to leave their lovely little hovels for good, but they also have to escape their island before they perish in the Darkness that's coming. Your objective therefore is to save as many Lemmings as possible from each tribe and help them escape the Island. The DOS version has a different sounding soundtrack due to the different sound card, but is otherwise identical.

A clever puzzle sequel on the Genesis that costs a bit more in the US than most US carts and far less in Europe.

This is the Genesis version of Lemmings 2: The Tribes. Digital Developments is credited as developer of the cartridge, with Psygnosis as publisher, and it came out in 1994 in North America and in November 1994 in Europe. The game began on the Amiga and other computers in 1993. It is a puzzle strategy game in which you guide lemmings to the exit using a set of skills, now with an overarching story and levels based on different tribes of lemmings.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 43April 199591%

“The new lemmings characters do offer novel gameplay, but after a while you'll discover that it's just the same old thing in a different package. An okay title, but by no means an essential purchase.”

— Sega Magazine, December 1994

“‘Superb sequel that's even more addictive than its predecessor. The Lemmings now have nearty 50 different ‘kills to use in 120 brain-bending stages. You'll be”

— Sega Pro, April 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

For consoles including the Mega Drive, the game was modified to support reduced levels, skills and numbers of lemmings on-screen.

Also on other platforms

Amiga · Atari ST · MS-DOS · Super NES · Game Boy · Acorn Archimedes · FM Towns

  • Super NES. The Super NES version supports the Super NES Mouse, and the Super Scope through a hidden easter egg; Mike Dailly called it one of the most complex games he had written.
  • Amiga. Lemmings 2 first came out on MS-DOS, Amiga and Atari ST on February 26, 1993, before the console ports.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs much less than the US one, both loose and complete. Sega Retro lists it as using the six-button pad and as working with the Sega Mouse, which suits a point-and-click puzzle game. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
