A serious helicopter simulator that rewards patience, and one of the cheapest US carts.

LHX Attack Chopper is a combat helicopter simulation that Electronic Arts first released for MS-DOS and then ported to the Genesis and Mega Drive. The Genesis cart came out in North America in October 1992, in Europe in 1992 and in Japan on 4 June 1993. The name stands for Light Helicopter Experimental.

Mean Machines reviewed it twice. One review called it a better strategy game and flight sim than EA's F-22 Interceptor, if less exciting as a dogfighter, and highly recommended it. Another review praised the realism and depth, called it a great game for serious Mega Drive players and warned that the complex controls might frustrate beginners. Sega Pro was cooler: it called the vector graphics and sound nothing special and said it should appeal only to war enthusiasts.

“A REAL air-combat simulation, LHX Attack Chopper is highly recommended to anyone after a good, lastable game.”

— Mean Machines, September 1992

“A truly involved Megadrive flight sim from the peo ple who brought you F-22 Interceptor. This isn't as exciting as F-22 in terms of dogfighting excitement, but it's a whole lot better both as strategy game and as flight sim. Highly recommended.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“LHX is one of the best, and only, helicopter sims around on the Mega Drive. LHX has a massive simulator slant and all the action is viewed in lovely polygons.”

— Mega Action, June 1993

“LHX is one of the best, and only, helicopter sims around on the Mega Drive. LHX has a massive simulator slant and all the action is viewed in lovely polygons. Great value.”

— Mega Action, July 1993

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Mean Machines called the Mega Drive game a great one for serious Megadrive players.

Sega Pro rated the import 70%, saying the vector graphics and sound were nothing special and it should appeal only to war junkies.

  • MS-DOS. The game was released first for MS-DOS and then ported to the Mega Drive; Computer Gaming World criticized its highly unrealistic flight model.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the cheapest. The European loose cart usually costs less than the US one, while complete copies cost about the same. The Japanese cart usually costs much more and has a different cartridge shape, so it needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
