About Looping

You are the pilot of plane and try to reach the docking station on the other side of the level. On your way to your goal you have to evade/shoot down enemies and navigate through a pipe maze. You earn points not only for shooting down the enemies but also for staying in the air as long as possible. It is therefore possible to fly through the maze over and over again before flying to the docking station in order to get a beter high score. After having reached the goal the game starts again on a higher difficulty level.

A sensitive, tricky biplane shooter that sold well on the ColecoVision and divided the critics.

Looping came to the ColecoVision as an arcade port programmed by Nuvatec, with Wikipedia naming Ed English as the programmer. Coleco published it in North America in May 1983, and CBS Electronics published it in Europe. Wikipedia says it became one of the console's top sellers by September 1983.

Joystik in September 1983 said you must learn a new touch to steer the plane upside down and vertically through six rooms per flight. Video Games Player praised the colorful, detailed graphics and sound but warned that the sensitive controls could frustrate younger players. Electronic Games said the home version lets players who found the arcade too hard use a bozo difficulty setting until the play mechanic clicks.

What the press said at the time

JoyStik September 1983September 1983★★★★★ (5 of 5)
Video Games Player Vol. 2 No. 2November 1983B

“Looping is not a game you will conquer right away. … All in all, it's a good addition to the Colecovision library.”

— JoyStik, September 1983

“Don't expect to become a Looping master blaster in a matter of seconds, but it's worth some effort. The enchanting graphics and perfect coin-op ambiance make it one of ColecoVi-sion's most appealing entries.”

— Electronic Games, September 1983

“So, while younger children may find this game a bit frustrating, those interested in a challenge will be satisfied.”

— Video Games Player, November 1983

JoyStik’s capsule ratings run from one star to five. Video Games Player graded games like a report card, A+ down to C-.

How the ColecoVision version differs

The ColecoVision cartridge was the only home version. Conversions for the Atari 2600 and Intellivision were planned but never released.

It became one of the top-selling cartridges for the console in 1983, though critics were mixed on its sound design and frustrating, sensitive controls.

Worth knowing

  • From the ColecoVision manual. The right side button fires bullets and the left side button accelerates, but speeding up makes your loops bigger.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. On the hardest skill level you must shoot a second hidden rocket before the maze gate opens.
  • From the ColecoVision manual. Reaching The End earns a bonus flight, and the second time around more rockets must be hit before the gate opens.

Before you buy

Standard controller, though the sensitivity makes a better stick worthwhile. European copies from CBS Electronics exist and play on a North American console; note which publisher the box names. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value.
