Atari Lynx prices, all games & how to spot a fake

Five casino games in one cartridge, and a surprisingly popular one — the sealed premium is large.

Brian A. Rice, Inc. developed it and Atari published it in 1992. Blackjack, poker, slots, roulette and craps, with two-player ComLynx support. It is exactly what it says it is, and it does it competently.

Its sealed price runs to roughly four times loose, one of the wider gaps in the mid-tier library — casino compilations seem to have been bought and played rather than shelved.

What the press said at the time

“Lynx Casino lets you walk around the gaming floor of a humorously-depicted gambling den, complete with potted palms, an Elvis impersonator, and other menaces to navigation. If you walk up to any of the casino denizens and press the A button, they'll even talk to you.”

— Atari Explorer, May/June 1992

“If you drop $1,000, head to the Cashier's window. They'll give you credit for $500 two times. Once you lose $2,000, you're out of luck.”

— GamePro #36, 1992

Worth knowing

  • The maths is real, down to a 97% payback. Atari Explorer recorded the rules in detail: blackjack uses a six-deck shoe with the dealer drawing to 16 and standing on 17, with doubling, split and insurance supported; video poker uses a 53-card deck with a single wild Joker; the slots take bets up to $5 and "sport a statistical payback of 97%, just like the real thing". The magazine suggested using it as training before a trip to Vegas.
  • The bank will stake you twice, then stop. GamePro documented the economy in 1992: lose your first $1,000 and the Cashier's window extends $500 of credit, twice. Once you are $2,000 down the game is over. It is a harder failure state than most casino games of the era bothered with.

Before you buy

Standard Lynx pattern: cheap cart, expensive box. If you are paying the sealed premium, grade it — Lynx shrink-wrap is ordinary resealable film.
