A cheerful platformer whose Western release is a redrawn version of a Japanese game, and a cart that sits above the middle.

On the Genesis this is Decap Attack, developed by Vic Tokai and published by Sega. It is a westernized version of the Japanese Mega Drive game Magical Hat no Buttobi Tābo! Daibōken, with the art, plot, music and level designs all changed. The Japanese game came out on 15 December 1990, Decap Attack in North America in 1991 and in Europe on 9 October 1991.

Mean Machines Sega called it a fun-filled platform game basically identical to the old import, apart from different sprites and backdrops, and said platform fans would love it. Mega placed it at number 22 in its list of the top Mega Drive games of all time.

“There’s enough originality to keep a gamer’s interest and the characters are really a scream (pun intended). If you like Mario or Bonk type games, You'll love De-Cap-Attack.”

— Game Informer, Fall 1991

“A fun-filled platform game which is basically identi cal to the old import game, Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure, except it has different sprites and backdrops. Platform fans will love it - if you're one, check it out.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Rather large platform game in which you play a sort of Frankenstein's Monster creature who gets rid of the baddies by throwing his head at them. Unusual gameplay makes it fun to play. Not particularly flash in the graphics and sound departments.”

— MegaTech, May 1993

“Unusual gameplay makes it fun to play. … Not particularly flash in the graphics and sound departments.”

— MegaTech, June 1993

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European loose cart usually costs a little less than the US one, though a complete copy costs more. The Japanese cart, the original Magical Hat game, usually costs noticeably more, and its cartridge has a different shape.
