Not a game: CommaVid's mail-order programming cartridge, made in tiny numbers.

MagiCard is an Atari 2600 programming tool on a cartridge, sold only by mail order and originally shipped with a 128-page manual. Dr. John Bronstein, one of CommaVid's three founders, developed it, and it is dated to May 1981. CommaVid co-owner Irwin Gaines put production at 50 to 100 cartridges.

It was also the key to CommaVid's Video Life, of which fewer than 20 cartridges were made: Video Life was offered only by special mail order to MagiCard owners.

How it was made

Developed by Dr. John Bronstein and sold by CommaVid, the Aurora, Illinois company he founded with Irwin Gaines and Joseph Biel.

What the press said at the time

“For those who love to experiment, for those interested in programming, and for collectors—MagiCard is a must.”

— Computer Entertainer, June 1984

Worth knowing

  • "Only 500 copies". Electronic Fun's January 1983 collecting column singled out the CommaVid Magic Card: "With only 500 copies in existence".

Before you buy

Medium risk. No fakes are documented, but with so few made, the value justifies care. The 128-page manual is a large part of what made MagiCard usable, so ask whether it is included. Compare the label and shell against AtariAge's scans and ask for a board photo through the dust door.
