How often it sells

  • Loose: about once a year
  • Complete: about once a year
  • Sealed: rarely — fewer than one recorded sale a year

Prices marked “few sales” rest on about one recorded sale a year, so treat them as a rough guide: the next copy could sell well above or below. Expect to wait for one to come up.

A Japanese-only mahjong cart from the launch window, interesting mainly as a piece of the first AES lineup.

Mahjong-kyo Retsuden: Nishi Nihon Hen is a mahjong game from SNK, released in arcades in April 1990 and on the Japanese AES on 1 July 1991, when the system's first home carts went on general sale. Only the Japanese cart is tracked.

Like the other mahjong and quiz carts, it is made for players who read Japanese; the text and the rules are the game. A Neo Geo CD version followed in 1994.

Before you buy

Only a Japanese cart is tracked, so there is no US version to compare. Loose and complete copies are priced close together in the tracked sales, which suggests most listings are bare carts or are sold without much regard for the box. Because the cart is not a hot property, a seller asking a lot for a supposed complete copy is worth a photo of the board; genuine AES boards are marked NEO-AEG. Expect a hard plastic case with artwork and a manual when complete, and expect to need Japanese to play it.
