About Mario Andretti Racing

Italian-born Mario Andretti is one of the most successful racing drivers in the US scene, and five of his relatives have also raced professionally. This game allows you to sample Indy cars, stock cars and sprint cars, all of which have been graced by Andrettis. The physics are customized to each of these, so expect sprint cars to slide around on the dirt tracks, and the slipstream effect is detectable. There are 27 computer-controlled cars with individual profiles, and 8 cars to choose from in each race, with varying engine, grip, brakes and pit crew standards. You can view the action either from behind the car, or from the nose. In longer races you must monitor the pit strategy, with the options of a splash 'n' dash stop if your tires are still fine.

An early EA Sports racer that covers three kinds of racing, and a very cheap US cart.

Mario Andretti Racing was one of the first games in the EA Sports line, developed by Stormfront Studios and High Score Productions and released on the Genesis in 1994 in North America and Europe. Scott Orr produced it, and Andretti personally guided the AI for the computer drivers across its three kinds of racing: stock cars, Indy-style open wheel cars and dirt track, each with its own physics and AI.

GameFan, previewing the Genesis game in 1994, noted fifteen tracks, five per circuit, with a career option to stretch them out.

“The career mode is cool, but the game needs a lot more tracks and items.”

— Game Informer, July-August 1994

“Some may consider gaining high positions too easy to start off, uniike many Mega Drive racing games, but iťs a fun drive that packs exciting and realistic game-play with long-term playability for a well-priced £44.99. A surprisingly”

— Sega Pro, August 1994

“Whattaya know, a great Mario game on the Genesis! Mario Andretti Racing provides a realistic, satisfying driving experience.”

— GamePro, August 1994

“A very poor racing game from the same people who brought us Lotus and Road Rash. What a step backwards this is.”

— MegaTech, September 1994

Before you buy

Among US carts the loose cart is one of the cheapest. The European cart usually costs much more than the US one, both loose and complete. A cardboard-box edition is priced separately and a complete one costs a little more than the plastic-case copy.
