About Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Based of the 1994 movie remake of Frankenstein, the player is the artificial man created by Victor Frankenstein. After Victor rejects his creation due to its hideous appearance, the creation flees from Victor and swears revenge on him. The player goes through a number of levels, battling anything that attacks with a wooden stick. It's possible to set the tip of the stick on fire, by swinging it at the fire torches located on the walls. The player can also use a special attack: a blue ball coming out of the hands of the creation, which takes some of the player's life away. There are also some simple puzzles to be solved in order to get through the levels.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A moody film tie-in platformer on the Genesis that sits just above the middle on price.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an action platformer based on the 1994 film. Bits Studios developed it and Sony Imagesoft published it, in North America on 4 November 1994. This is the Genesis cartridge; a different game with the same name, a graphic adventure with fighting, was made for the Sega CD.

Among US carts it sits just above the median. It came out in North America only. Make sure a listing is the cartridge and not the Sega CD game.

The Sega CD version

An adventure with film clips and tame fighting that reviewers found uneven, and a different game from the cartridge of the same name.

The Sega CD game is a different game from the Genesis and Super NES Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: Psygnosis developed it as a graphic adventure with 2D fighting, and Sony Imagesoft published it in North America in 1994.

Sega Visions described it as an action-adventure that combines clips from the film with inventory-based play, puzzle solving and some truly tame fighting. You play the limping Creature, searching for clues to your existence and collecting items. Electronic Gaming Monthly found the one-player game challenging but the one-on-one fighting awkward, and called the results mixed.

What the press said at the time

Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 66January 19957, 8, 5, 5, 6

“This is a challenging game in the One-player Mode; however, the one-on-one fighting sequences are awkward and don’t work so well. Overall, this game yields mixed results.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 1995

“The overall problem with Frankenstein is that it tries to be a game for every genre … in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein the amount of confusion and downright foolishness it invokes destroys any semblance of an intelligent game.”

— Electronic Games, January 1995

“while the control is stilted, and the puzzles are a little obscure, it has a nice atmospheric look, and the rotoscoped animation is fine. It takes some work to get into, but if you stick with it, the game has its mild rewards.”

— Next Generation, February 1995

“This Sega CD Action /Adventure combines clips from the film with inventory-based gaming, puzzle solving, and some truly tame fighting.”

— Sega Visions, February/March 1995

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system."

Before you buy

This is a Med-risk disc, so ask for photos of the printed side, the data side and the inner ring, and check that the title and catalogue number on the disc match the case. Make sure the listing is for the Sega CD game, since the cartridge versions carry the same name.
