Before you buy

Low counterfeit risk. Loose cartridges are inexpensive, but boxed copies sell for many times as much. On a complete copy you are paying mostly for the box, so inspect it closely and make sure the cartridge inside is the M Network 2600 version rather than the Intellivision one.

The Intellivision version

The Intellivision original of the first He-Man game; the comic book matters.

On the Intellivision, The Power of He-Man is a horizontally scrolling action game that Mike Sanders and Jossef Wagner designed for Mattel and Mattel published in 1983. This is the original.

Electronic Fun listed it in May 1983 among Mattel's games for kids. Collectors value it more for the packaging than the play.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 2 No. 10January 1984Graphics ★★★★ · Play-Action ★★★½

“This is one of Mattel's best efforts in some time. Graphics are beautiful, with particularly good rendition of the two characters.”

— Computer Entertainer, January 1984

“The bottom line is that this game is boring. Within the first five minutes eyes begin to glaze over.”

— Electronic Games, September 1984

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Before you buy

A complete copy includes a comic book, so a copy without one is missing a piece. Mattel also packed two keypad overlays. The price jumps steeply from loose to boxed to sealed, so verify the box, manual and comic before paying for a complete copy.
