He's off to find and defeat the baddies who have the other pieces of the map. Ronald can jump, shoot and use his scarf to grab onto hooks to jump to higher levels. Jewels and flowers collected in each level can be used to purchase extra lives and power-ups in shops between levels.

A charming Treasure-made platformer that is much better than its fast-food license suggests, and now one of the pricier US carts.

McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure was developed by Treasure and published by Sega. You play Ronald McDonald, recovering missing pieces of a treasure map from a group of villains, defeating enemies with a magic attack and swinging up to higher platforms by latching his scarf onto hooks. It came out in Japan on 23 September 1993, in North America in December 1993 and in the PAL territories in March 1994.

Treasure made it in parallel with Gunstar Heroes. Sega commissioned the game because it was ineligible to receive a publishing contract to develop games for the Genesis itself, and the project helped Treasure get to know the hardware.

“Colourful and well designed. However it is really dated compared to more recent games”

— Mega Drive Advanced Gaming, January 1994

“Overall, younger gamers will be enchanted by Ronald, though older gamers will still feel hungry.”

— GamePro, January 1994

“The game's great to play, with plenty of features and a fair few levels to keep you occupied. In fact, the game only has one problem. It's basically too easy.”

— Sega Magazine, June 1994

Before you buy

Among US carts this is one of the pricier ones, so ask for a clear photo of the board and check the listing carefully. The European cart usually costs much more than the US one, and a complete European copy costs far more. The Japanese cart usually costs far more than the US cart, and its different cartridge shape needs an adapter or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot.
