Documented sales

468 US copies invoiced by Atari in 1990

Ranked 35 of the 39 Atari 7800 cartridges in Atari's internal reports. These count cartridges shipped to US stores, less returns, not copies sold to players, and they end on 31 December 1990, so the game's 1991 shipments are not included.

A scarce, full golf simulation that Atari's own magazine called an exceptional translation, and one of the library's pricier carts.

BlueSky Software developed the 7800 version of Accolade's computer golf game, which Atari Corporation published. Computer Entertainer listed it among the new 7800 games Atari showed at a trade show, and it reached the library as one of the final wave. In early 1991 Atari Explorer was still introducing it as newly available, calling it an exceptional translation that kept the original's detail and play value.

Atari Explorer described it as less a game than a full golf simulation, recreating a Pebble Beach tournament with the terrain shown in physical detail: fairway, rough, sand and water traps, trees, the green and distant scenery.

How it was made

Developed by BlueSky Software and published by Atari Corporation, from Accolade's computer game.

What the press said at the time

“Mean 18 Ultimate Golf is an exceptional gaming value for 7800 owners — and a real practice tool for the serious player.”

— Atari Explorer, March-April 1991

Atari Explorer was Atari Corp.'s own magazine, so its reviews are of the company's own games.

How the Atari 7800 version differs

The 7800 version has a complete 18-hole course, regular or pro tees, and stroke or match play (two players only) at two difficulty levels, according to Atari Explorer.

Atari Corporation published the 7800 port in 1989.

Worth knowing

  • From the 7800 manual. Options: Beginner or Expert skill, Regular or Pro tees, Stroke or Match play.
  • From the 7800 manual. Match play is only available for two-player games.

Before you buy

Rated very rare on AtariAge's scale, and expensive even loose. Pro-Line joystick; the cartridge has the Atari color label (CX7847). Value alone makes it a risk, but no fakes are documented, and a cart that boots on a stock 7800 doesn't prove it's original, because reproduction carts since 2001 are signed to pass the check. Ask for a clear photo of the label and board, and the manual's Atari Corporation, Sunnyvale copyright line.
