A fast light-gun shooter that a well-known 7800 retrospective ranks among the system's best exclusives, if you own a gun.

Meltdown is a one-player light-gun game developed and published by Atari Corporation for the 7800 only. It needs the Atari XG-1 light gun, the one sold with the XE Game System, and the manual tells you to connect it to the left controller port. Wikipedia counts it among five 7800 games compatible with the XG-1.

Retro Gamer's Kieren Hawken ranked it among the best 7800 games and in the top five exclusives, saying it might not look like much, but the frantic shooting action will leave you sweating.

How it was made

Atari Corporation developed and published it in the final wave of 7800 releases, in 1990 or 1991 depending on the source.

Worth knowing

  • From the 7800 manual. Passkey codes: a level's four-character passkey is shown the first time you reach it and can be entered to start on that level.
  • From the 7800 manual. Save all 20 reactors to win.
  • From the 7800 manual. Two difficulty levels: Novice and Expert.

Before you buy

The gun is the catch. The XG-1 never came in the game box, so budget for the gun or check what the seller includes. Light guns need a CRT television. AtariAge records the catalogue number as CX7875 (Wikipedia's CX7805 is Galaga's), and rates the color-label cart Common+. The manual copyright should read Atari Corporation, Sunnyvale, 1990. Be wary of a sealed price that looks lower than a complete one; the sealed figure for this title is thin.
